My first thought was of Rafa Benetiz and his 'FACT' press conference when Alex Ferguson finally sent him mad and he lost it.
It was a jokey throwaway remark by Allardyce that obviously struck a nerve.
Bringing on Fellaini and lumping it has been a regular part of their attack.
The manager with DiMaria, Rooney, RVP & Falcao at his disposal is obviously a bit sheepish at that.

Allardyce makes tongue in cheek in comment. The end. Except everyone slaughters Van Gaal for going long ball. Hitting balls into the box for the last 5 minutes to try and get an equaliser has been done by every team in the history of the game until Barcelona came along.

Van Gaal has taken this personally but I actually think Sam's comment was also a little dig at the media. He gets tagged by the media for being a 'direct / long ball' manager yet here are the great Man Utd doing exactly the same. I think he was highlighting it to them more than anything.
Problem for Van Gaal is that the proper Man Utd fans will know Sam is right. They had to resort to pumping it up to Fellani to steal a point at West Ham having spent £150m on players. It's a fucking disgrace.

Well the funny thing is that I don't think Van Gaal and Allardyce seem to disagree that Man Utd went more direct towards the end of the match. So I think it's more a misunderstanding between the two.

I doubt Van Gaal gives a fuck about any negative light cast on him but him doing this does keep the subject in the media spotlight, and when allardyce plays nolan & Carroll again (and he will), the media will come at him with both barrels.
